[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Calvin
FANDOM: Calvin & Hobbes newspaper comics
CHRONOLOGY: The end, although newspaper comic time makes continuity largely irrelevant for him.
CLASS: Civilian, anti-hero.
SUPERHERO NAME: STUPENDOUS MAAAAAN!
ALTER EGO: Calvin, ordinary child and (unwilling) student.
BACKGROUND:
Calvin’s world is much like our own. He is a six-year old boy attending first grade who lives with his parents and best friend/stuffed tiger Hobbes in a town somewhere in the Midwestern United States. Calvin’s house is in the suburbs and borders a great wilderness area in its backyard, full of woods and creeks and hills, and his life and adventures revolve around exploring the world, having fun, and desperately avoiding responsibility. While Hobbes is just a stuffed toy to everyone around him, Calvin perceives him as a walking, talking tiger and his closest companion.
PERSONALITY:
Calvin is extremely intelligent for his age, but with little wisdom, maturity, restraint, or self-discipline to go along with it: he will create a club solely for harassing girls, but its constitution will be more verbose than that of most countries. He is impressionable, impulsive, hyperactive, highly mischievous, and deals poorly with authority and responsibility. Calvin has a strong desire for instant gratification and does not react well to not getting his way.
The breadth and depth of his imagination is astounding. Calvin often finds the real world intolerably dull or cruel, and escapes into wild flights of fancy ranging from outer space to prehistory. The trouble he gets into while acting out, say, Spaceman Spiff escaping alien captivity (actual Calvin fleeing his class) only encourages him to spend more time in his own reality. His imagination also manifests itself in his artistic and scientific ambitions, ranging from cardboard box duplicators to amateur paleontology.
For all his tantrums, all his slavish devotion to consumer culture, and all his childish cruelties, Calvin has a good heart at his core and is capable of surprising sensitivity and insight. He has a deep connection with nature, often wrestles with advanced philosophical questions, and has a great appreciation for the beautiful and the astonishing, all of which lead to rare but profound moments of deep thoughtfulness.
In all, despite his vocabulary and advanced knowledge, Calvin is a child to his core with all the wonder and annoyance that implies.
POWER:
NONCANON: Calvin will once again gain the powers of one of his alter-egos, Stupendous Man: flight (accompanied by a little ‘KAPWING’ sound effect), superior strength and durability compared to most six-year-olds, and controlled stupendous senses.
